Mens en Machine bij overheidsdienstverlening

Afbeelding

Google, it's time to expand the Data Liberation Front to the Privacy Protection Front.

Afbeelding
A  not very well known initiative within Google is the so-called Data Liberation Front . Their mission statement:, " Users should be able to control the data they store in any of Google's products.  Our team's goal is to make it easier to move data in and out .". A worthy goal which has led to better possibilities to remove your data from Google's services. Also know as Google Take Out . In my view their mission could be expanded to not only controlling your data in Google products but also to be in more control about your privacy and how your data is used. If you use google services all your data is used to improve those services and predict/anticipate your desires, actions and purchases. People get more and more uncomfortable about that lately. Including their parliaments, at least in Europe. This is reinforced by all the Snowden/NSA fall-out which make clear that data inside Google is not that safe and well protected as it could be. Google has clear business ...

Privacy & User Experience

In the public debate following the revelations by Snowden one aspect is a bit overlooked in my view. It's the relation between privacy and user experience. A strange couple at first glance. In the discussion about privacy there is a bit of a paradox. Activists go out of their way to explain that there are all kind of excellent technical tools to assure or better protect your privacy (which is true). The best ofcourse based on open source and open standards. It remains "talk" most of the time. After the discussion about it 98% of the users return to their comfortable Facebook, Google or Apple world. And with a reason, they love the user experience, the ease of use. Something most of the privacy enhancing tools do not match. I really hope the market will also notice this and more real user friendly privacy enhancing tools will come along. Maybe even integrated in products of the great platform providers (Google, encryption in Gmail would be nice). It's difficult for ope...

Google's next frontier, analyzing what we see.

Google announced a large number of Google+ updates recently. They were focused on Google+ Hangouts and photo's. On the surface the most of them look like eye-candy and not fundamental in nature. However with one exception in my view. That is the further expansion of the possibilities in searching what is actually in a picture. In practice this means you can search for over a 1000 terms in your photo's or the photo's of posts in your circles in Google+. Ofcourse the number of terms will grow. Myself i tried "sunset", "labrador", "grass", "child", "beach" etc. with amazing success. To accomplish this Google has actually to analyse each video and photo for it's content. An algorithm has to recognise elements within the picture and index them. This gives the possibility to automatically add "meaning" to a picture. In a format that computers can use and analyse on a large scale. You can read more about it in the G...

Albert Heijn in "the Age of Context"

Chromecast, after two weeks.

Just a few weeks ago i bought a Chromecast, not yet officially available in the Netherlands but you can buy it on various online marketplaces. It's one of those seemingly simple devices with a high impact. It specs are not better then Apple TV, it can do less then the various Android HDMI sticks available. Still i will not trade it for one of those. First reason is the price, $ 35 (excluding delivery and additional profits from people reselling it ;-), second reason and the most important one, is the ease of use. The installation was extremely simple, plug it in to your television, connect to your Wifi. And then..... nothing. Just open an app that can use it, like Netflix or Youtube and simply "cast". Casting is not streaming but really sending a message to the stick attached to your TV to get some media content from the cloud. Also the reason why Chromecast does not really work nice with "local" files or live-streaming. My big discovery is that my Youtube ha...
